Carrie Schuettpelz

Main Instructor

Carrie Schuettpelz (she/her/hers) is a Faculty Fellow-of-Practice at the University of Iowa Public Policy Center, as well as a Faculty Lecturer in the Department of Rhetoric. Prior to joining the Iowa faculty, she was a homelessness policy advisor in the Obama Administration. She holds her BA from the University of Iowa, a Masters in Public Policy from Harvard, and an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Wisconsin. She is at work on a novel.

Constance Judd

Teaching Assistant

Constance (she/her/hers) is a second-year graduate fellow at the University of Iowa in the HESA (Higher Education & Student Affairs) Program. Ms. Judd works closely with both Academic Support & Retention – Learning Assistants (LA) Program – and Explore Iowa to oversee projects and provide not only academic support, but resources as well. Prior to returning to Iowa, Ms. Judd worked as an educator and cultural ambassador for the US in Japan between 2018-20 via the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program. There, she aided in not only expanding access to education but strengthening cultural ties between the US and Japan. She received her BA in Communication Studies and Asian Languages & Literature from the University of Iowa in 2018 and holds licensures in teaching English as a foreign language as well as being proficient in Japanese. Ms. Judd’s ongoing interests lie between both higher and global education because of how interconnected the world is steadily becoming. She also enjoys volunteering for international organizations to provide resources for students and their families.

Grace Winders

Peer Mentor

Grace (she/her/hers) is a fourth-year student at the University of Iowa. She is a positive, passionate student who loves learning about our world and being a leader within it. Grace is majoring in Enterprise Leadership and minoring in dance. Someday, she hopes to make an impact by being the founder of her own company. Originally from Urbandale, IA, Grace graduated from Waukee High School and is proud to be an Iowa native. Grace is a part of the Iowa Dance Team and greatly enjoys living out her dream representing the greatest university ever. When she isn’t dancing, Grace is a member of Athletes in Action, a faith-driven organization on campus. Grace is embarking on her second year as a peer mentor for Explore Iowa and is excited to continue to support freshman students and encourage their exploration of the University of Iowa. This semester, Grace’s college study must-haves include: fall scented candles, sour gummy worms, and The Lumineers softly playing in the background.

Jade Barnes

Peer Mentor

Jade (she/they) is a fourth-year student pursuing a BFA in painting with certificates in Entrepreneurial Management and Public Digital Arts with a visual-storytelling track. As an artist, she focuses on transmitting emotions through animations and illustrations- especially for children. She hopes to bring new, diverse, and untold stories to kids. She currently works at Grasshorse studios where she has worked on numerous projects such as “Slow Down”, a music video for Colbie Caillat and her band, and Iowa State University’s commercial, “The World Turns”. Outside of art, Jade enjoys trying new recipes, laughing with her friends, and the Fast and Furious movies. Her favorite local businesses are White Rabbit, Om, Teamo, and Honeybee Hair Parlor!

Cierra Johannes

Peer Mentor

Cierra (she/her/hers) is a psychology major with a social work interest; and will be applying to the College of Social Work in February. She plans to continue her education and get her master's in Social Work and work as a mental health and substance abuse counselor. Cierra currently works at Childserve and is a lime-captain for Dance Marathon. In her free time, she enjoys volunteering, photography, baking, and exploring the outdoors.

Zoe Green

Peer Mentor

Zoe (she/her/hers) is a second-year peer-mentor and a third-year pre-business major with plans to pursue marketing management. After graduating she hopes to be involved in Medical Sales. She loves spending time outside and participating in co-ed sand volleyball. She is from Clear Lake, Ia. and enjoys walks around the lake with her dog Ollie! In her free time she likes to volunteer at the Human Society and at St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

Ellie Wichman

Ellie (she/her/hers) is a third-year student at the University of Iowa studying Neuroscience with a minor in Dance on the Pre-Medicine track. Originally from Herndon, Virginia, Ellie chose to attend Iowa for its reputable health sciences programs and aspires to work in healthcare after her undergraduate years at the University. On campus, Ellie is involved in the University of Iowa Dance Marathon (UIDM) and the University of Iowa Undergraduate Dance Organization (UIUDO). This is her second year as a peer mentor, and she is excited to continue working with the students and faculty of Explore Iowa!

Hannah Robinson

Hannah (she/her/hers) is a second-year student at the University of Iowa. She is an outgoing student who’s passionate about mental health advocacy. Hannah is majoring in Social Work and minoring in Spanish. After college, she hopes to be a Youth Case Worker in a Mental Psychiatric Ward setting. She was born in Des Moines, IA, and graduated from Ankeny Centennial High School in 2020. Hannah likes to spend her free time hanging out with friends and playing board games. This is Hannah’s first year as a peer mentor and she’s very excited to lead and support students through the journey of their first year on campus. Hannah’s favorite food is pasta and her favorite candy is Sour Watermelon Jacks from Casey’s.

Morgan Stascavage

Morgan (he/him/his) is a second-year student at the University of Iowa studying speech and hearing sciences with an ASL minor with plans on being an audiologist. Morgan is involved on campus as a resident assistant (RA) in Catlett Hall; so whether you want to talk about Naruto, red hair dye, or you need help around campus, Morgan is eager to help and support you in any way possible! 

Olivia Johnson

Peer Mentor

Olivia (she/her/hers) is a second-year student at the University of Iowa majoring in Human Physiology on the Pre-Med track. One day, she hopes to care for and improve the health of those in the community as a doctor. Moving from Fargo, North Dakota, Olivia loves to live in the lively Iowa City environment. Olivia is on the executive board for the student club Exercise is Medicine, which promotes the benefits of physical activity, as well as being involved in the University of Iowa Running Club, Eats and Treats, Medicus, and working at the hospital as a CNA during the summer. In her free time, she loves to run, bake, and spend time outdoors. Olivia is a first-year peer mentor for Explore Iowa and can’t wait to share more about the place that she is blessed to call home, the University of Iowa.

Jack Walsh

Peer Mentor

Jack (he/him/his) is a second-year student at the University of Iowa majoring in exercise science on the pre-physical therapy track. Originally from Park Ridge Illinois, Jack chose the University of Iowa due to its prestigious physical therapy program as well as the feeling of a “campus town”. Jack’s hobbies include exercising, specifically swimming and water polo, watching films, and traveling!

Caroline Schmidt

Caroline (she/her/hers) is eager about going into her sophomore year at Iowa for the 2021-2022 school year. Originally from Orland Park, Illinois, Caroline is majoring in speech and hearing sciences. On campus she is in Delta Gamma sorority and involved in Dance Marathon. Caroline's greatest joy is working with others in a community environment. She cannot wait to explore the University of Iowa's campus and Iowa City even further with everyone this semester!

 

Alexia Lynn

Peer Mentor

Alexia (she/her/hers) is a second year student at the University of Iowa studying Psychology on the Pre-Medicine track. Coming from Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, Alexia chose to attend the University of Iowa for its high student population as well as the renowned Carver College of Medicine she hopes to attend at a later date. On Campus, Alexia is involved in the Minority Association of Pre-Health Students (MAPS) and the Promoting Animal Welfare in Society organization (UI PAWS).

Erin Evantiz

Erin (she/her/hers) is a second year student studying Speech and Hearing Sciences with plans to continue her education and earn a MS in Speech and Language Pathology. After graduation, she hopes to teach abroad and experience new ideas and cultures. She is from Colorado Springs, Colorado and graduated high school with an IB diploma. In her free time, she enjoys journaling/writing her penpals, having fun with her friends, and listening to music and podcasts!
